Crafting

Introduction

With the right skills you can cook meals, brew potions, make medicine, fix and reinforce your gear, and enchant it. Crafting is also one of the main ways to level those skills.

This guide covers crafting stations, how recipes work, the crafting skills, enchanting, and where materials come from.

Crafting Stations

The four crafting stations side by side: Workbench, Cooking Station, Brewing Station and Enchanting Table

Most crafting happens at a station. Walk up to one and click it. You can't use a station with enemies in view.

StationUsed for
WorkbenchRepairing, salvaging and bolstering gear. Medicine, satchels, campsite kits and ammo.
Cooking StationCooking. A campfire or cooking pot works too.
Brewing StationAlchemy: potions and toxins.
Enchanting TableEnchanting items, and disenchanting them.

Stations are found in town shops (a bakery has a cooking station, an apothecary a brewing station, smiths a workbench), in houses and farmhouses, and in many dungeons. Once you own a house, you can buy stations as furniture and put them in it.

Using a station for the first time also discovers its skill, such as Cooking or Alchemy (see Skills & Leveling).

Recipes

Roasted Haunch recipe: Cooking Station met, Meat Preparation ability missing, 1 Raw Meat needed with 0 in hand

Click a recipe to see what it needs:

  • 1The station to make it at.
  • 2A technique: an ability from the skill's tree, bought with Focus Points. Knowing a recipe isn't enough without it.
  • 3The ingredients, with how many you have.

Green means you have it, red means you don't.

Recovery Serum with every requirement met: its name is green in the list and the Craft button is active

When everything is met, the recipe's name turns green in the list. Press Craft and the item goes into your pack.

Crafting is instant and never fails. Ingredients can come from your pack or from your own storage chests nearby.

Some meals and potions come out superb or potent: a stronger version. Skill abilities raise the chance.

Learning Recipes

  • Everyone knows how to make Torches, Arrows and Bolts.
  • Unlocking a crafting skill teaches you its basic recipes. A new cook knows Roasted Haunch, Baked Potato and Boiled Egg.
  • Everything else comes from recipe scrolls, like a Bread Recipe, sold by bakers, grocers, butchers, apothecaries, scribes and other shops. You need the skill unlocked to learn one.

Crafting Anywhere

The Recipes window with Bandage selected: it needs only the Basic First Aid ability and 2 cloth, with no station

A few recipes need no station at all: bandages, torches, arrows and bolts. Open Crafting > Recipes from the bottom right of the screen to make them anywhere, or to browse every recipe you know.

The Survival skill's Build Fire ability also lets you light a campfire and cook anywhere.

Enchanting

The Enchanting window: Polished Longsword with the Accuracy enchantment selected, three potency levels requiring Enchanting 1, 3 and 6, and the table, ability and ingredients needed

At an Enchanting Table, pick an item, then an enchantment, then a potency: Low, Medium or High. Stronger potency needs a higher Enchanting level. Each enchantment costs Enchanting Crystals plus a reagent, such as a hawk claw, and needs the matching Imbuement ability for weapons, armor or jewelry.

  • An item can hold one enchantment.
  • You learn new enchantments by disenchanting items that have them. This destroys the item.
  • You can also buy a Scroll of Enchanting from the Leafborn enchanter.
  • Enchantments are Standard, Ancient (needs Enchanting 6) or Legendary (needs Enchanting 12).

Gathering Materials

Most recipes and repairs need materials like cloth, leather, wood and scrap metal. Rarer ones, like spidersilk, wyrmskin, adamant metal and ogre bones, go into better gear. There are several ways to get them:

  • Salvage gear you don't need at a Workbench. Items in Good condition give back all their materials; worn ones lose some. Any enchantment is lost, so disenchant first if you want to learn it.
  • Chop trees with an axe equipped, for wood. Special trees give oak, ashwood or bloodwood.
  • Mine ore heaps with a mace or pickaxe equipped, for ambersteel, adamant metal and infernal steel.
  • Harvest plants for herbs, mushrooms and berries. Plants you haven't identified with the Botany skill are hard to harvest, and they regrow over time.
  • Buy them from smiths, variety stores, and the travelling Salvage Merchant.

Unknown Potions

Potions you find are often unidentified. You can drink one to find out what it does, and risk it. Or pay an apothecary or potion seller 30 gold to identify all of them at once. Knowing a potion's recipe also identifies it.
