Tread Carefully, Friends
By Vincent Lodress, Year 1171
The universe is vast. So large you could spend a lifetime exploring and all you learn would amount to little more than a grain of sand in an endless, sprawling desert.
But don't let that deter you. All that has existed, does exist or ever will exist is not for one man to comprehend alone. Only through our collective understanding do we progress toward the level of knowledge we all seek.
Those of you who've followed my works thus far know that the desire to understand new cultures has always been a guiding light in my life. Living among them, documenting their way of life so that we all learn from one another.
Take, for example, my own experience with The Leafborn. Druids who dwell deep in the forests of Enalia and have committed their very lives to the propagation of the natural world and learning what inherent magics reside therein.
When I initially encountered them, they were wary of me and what my intentions might be. Far too often have they engaged with my fellow countrymen and found their conduct at odds with common Keeper practices.
My first encounter with them is a testament to this. As I brazenly strolled into their camp without a care where each boot heel landed, I noticed many disdainful looks. I didn't realize it at the time, but many of my careless steps felled lively woodland critters or precious flowers.
I have since learned to watch where and when I tread.
Fortunately, though, I was able to appeal to their reason. As long as I made an effort to hold and show respect for the forest and all of its inhabitants, they left me unhindered.
Collecting comprehensive yet well-rounded information about the peoples and places I discover on my journey across this continent is my primary goal, after all.
How could I do that if I was unwilling to temper my own beliefs and behaviors to open myself to whatever culture I find myself immersed in?
