The Roots' Riddle
By James Kovach, Historian, Year 1182
From what I've read, most tales about The Great Roots put their primary locale deep underground. However, that something claimed to be so grand and ageless has never once worked its way to the surface is hard to believe, especially when you consider how much softer and less compacted by pressure the ground becomes the closer you are to the open sky.
After all, most tree roots tend to spread outward rather than down in their search for water. Staying near the surface means they can more easily drink whenever rain falls or snow melts.
This simple fact does make one wonder what purpose The Great Roots serve if gathering water is not their primary objective. If we assume they still drink, perhaps it is not water they crave, but something else. And what, then, do they feed?
