The Island of Insanity

By Servo Valentius, Year 1204

Dear Gaius,

I hope the court finds you well and that you've not tired of those political games you do so enjoy.

To begin, I must first apologize for the impertinence of my forthcoming request, but I've found myself in a uniquely strange and difficult circumstance.

As you know, Magistrate Evander tasked me with putting together a geographical survey of our island in the hopes of finding the best possible location for his new port.

I set out to travel the entire perimeter of the island, hoping to conduct a satisfyingly thorough investigation.

However, about halfway through my trip — basically weeks ago now — it suddenly occurred to me: where do we dock, currently? Here I am, looking for a new location, and I cannot remember ever visiting our present one.

Embarrassingly, I could not even remember the name of the city in which it was located. And what I was told when I asked locals for information has me even more confused. They, too, could not recall a single port ever existing.

The truth is — I've had no luck finding a single soul aware of any ports, docks, or ships anywhere on the island!

How is this possible? Have we not received taxes from our trade routes? It's true, I never worked for the treasury or managed the letters, but I've been in more than one council meeting where we discussed such matters.

I cannot return to the capital with my mission unfinished. But how am I supposed to complete it while also ignoring such a rampant and unsettling revelation. Has the whole island forgotten? Or have we all simply gone mad!?

It is for this reason I am writing to you for help. Please send along a scholar to meet me here in Bedrock village, along with documents and maps clearly outlining our current port connections; or, if I am somehow mistaken in this assumption, I beg you explain — just what is going on?

Please hurry, my friend. I can think of no one else to turn to and will not return to Julia empty-handed.

Eagerly awaiting your reply,

Servo Valentius (signed with an official seal)
