Report: The Green-Orb Anomaly
By Master Researcher Kaelen of the Tempest Order, Year 1212
It is a tedious necessity that we must continue to house and study the various trinkets recovered by our agents.
It has been three years since the first of these specimens was recovered from the ruins of the of O'Beksal, a fortress once thought to be a secure containment site for Keripis-era detritus.
This item, which we have designated Green-Orb, junior initiates have taken to calling the "Void Eye"; a clumsy translation of the Aridax term N'vax-Khel. This name is as dramatic as it is inaccurate, implying a potency that such a crude device could never harbor.
However, I admit what you have heard is true, and despite our efforts the spheres remain a stubborn mystery. To be clear, it is not anything beyond our ability. Our research will unravel whatever trickery these orbs hide, though it is taking a surprising amount of time
As per the request of Archmage Nilus, I am filing this report on our initial findings.
Regarding the trigger mechanism, the orb activates rarely and only when confronted with external magical energy. Upon activation, any individual in the immediate vicinity is swallowed by a thick darkness that obscures the senses, a shroud that we have discovered can only be combated by a personal light source held directly by the user. External lanterns or wall-mounted fires provide no aid, suggesting the fog is a localized discordance latching onto an individual.
More disturbing is the random manifestation of flames around the feet of those nearby, which are not the vibrant, pure flames of the true frequency to which we are so accustomed. Instead, they are a sickly, stagnant green, a perverse mutation and a dangerous subversion of the natural elements.
As for the rumours that one Initiate is able to control green fires, this is only a lie. My exhaustive experimentation has determined such control impossible.
To prevent the risk of blindness or further harm, I recommend we house these Green-Orbs only in our deeper sub-vaults. Access must be strictly limited to the rank of Master or higher to ensure our initiates are not corrupted by the subversive theorizing such trickery invites.
To expedite our understanding, I have authorized the distribution of the remaining four specimens to our satellite sanctums at Prectica, Prist, Statica, and Metricant. Dispersing the objects will allow for a broader range of experimental conditions while ensuring no single sanctum is compromised by their localized discordance.
