The Order: Journal Entry #2
Mysteries abound in these hallowed halls. A new recruit, I've not yet been permitted to see the artifact for myself. Ever since I originally learned of its existence, I've been more than a little intrigued. Obsessed, even.
Practically overnight it became my mission to unravel the artifact's secrets. I doggedly pursued every lead; every scrap of wisdom presented to me. But, unfortunately, what I was able to discover from outside The Order was limited.
The romance inherent in a mystery is quaint, but answers are what I'm after. And what little I've uncovered since becoming a member has only whetted my appetite.
The Elders say the "force" which lies beneath The Order's grounds is something we could never fully understand. But I disagree! When pushed for more details, Gu-Daron explained that the mystery surrounding the artifact itself is the impetus behind our Order's very existence.
Satisfying enough, but I am still not convinced a fuller answer has not come to light in the intervening years.
While the artifact is undoubtedly the most potent source of magical energy in all the world, the overtly destructive nature of the magic it provides would suggest the measures we use to control it run counter to its intended purpose.
My own research suggests that this idea lies at the core of why The Order, alone, is able to wield it.
Before taking my oaths, I read a tome which spoke long and lovingly about the formation of this temple as a means to house and rein in the relic and its overwhelming influence. Truly a monumental task, but an altogether vital one.
A letter addressed to the leader of a rival sect offered more details, advising him how this temple functions as much more than lodgings and why they should stay away. This, along with threats of what might happen if they did not.
Even the bemused and slightly contradictory messages of devotion scrawled into the temple walls -- etched into their surface long ago -- offer small glimpses of knowledge.
What I learned from these and other sources allowed me to hone my theory. But it matters little. I must lay eyes on the artifact myself to confirm what I currently suspect...
