Those of us who survived the initial onslaught more or less intact were faced with a world left shattered. Everything we had ever known or found comfort in had been stripped away, leaving both us and the land barren and hollow.

We'd survived the worst of the storms, but we now faced an even greater threat: the slow and painstakingly upward climb out from the grasping claws of starvation and poverty.

For years, destruction and death were a daily occurrence. The experience itself was so frequent it became mundane. Those who survived – from youngest child to oldest sage – numbed themselves. There was no other way.

Simple tasks became a struggle to survive. The darkness and isolation threatened to devour us all. And, though many fought on, countless others succumbed to despair...
