The Great Roots I

By Professor Pernum, Year 1142

There are great number of misconceptions regarding the Great Roots and the history surrounding their discovery. These massive tree roots, found several hundred feet beneath the surface, have been the source of countless legends, folk tales, and superstitions.

Though their existence has been confirmed, the true extent of their so-called magical quality is unknown. The King's scholar's will tell you these roots hold the key to an ancient wisdom, though few are credulous enough to believe such nonsense.

In "The Roots of Dyrisa" it is written that these roots are no different than oversized tree roots. Of this position we must also be suspect. The author of this work presents no hypothesis as to the source for these roots, simply hand-waving the issue away.

In his work "Trees and Their Folk", Turil claims to have cut some of the root and used it to animate a staff. An animated staff! If this were true, why can we find no source of corroboration to his tale? Turil as we know was not a thorough scholar, but a man pulled to the verge of superstition by fantastical dreams and ruminations. Not to mention his proclivity for smoking Nerine.

What do these roots give life to? Where are the great trees, I ask? That no one has answered this question demonstrates the lack of real scholarly thought in this area. The sad truth is that we have only just begun to unravel this mystery.
