Notes from a Bard
By Albert Most, Bard's College of Verna. Date unknown
My name is Albert Most, and I am a bard from the college in Verna. I decided to explore the misty forest as I have been hearing many tales of strange and magical things happening in this area. Since I've been having a case of writer's block lately, I figured experiencing some wild adventures would give me fuel for the newest show I've agreed to put on at "The Red Gremlin," my favorite Tavern.
I wandered into this grove and have not stopped marveling with each passing second. Nature continues to astound! I had been near this place before, but only in passing with my brother while on a hunt to supply his butcher shop with fresh meat, and to collect some of the flavorful herbs in the area.
I found a cave entrance this morning and plan to explore it after lunch. All seems quiet for now, and thanks to this handy map I bought from that new Cartographer in town, I know exactly where I am.
Most of the cave is flooded with cool flowing water from knee to waist in height, and after finding my first break from those turbid waters and making a fire to warm up, I am considering abandoning this adventure. As I've been wading through the twisting passages I swear I hear splashing following behind me, and sometimes all around me, but it stops whenever I do, and nobody answers my calls...perhaps it is simply a trick of the echoing walls here.
At the end of a side tunnel which climbed up out of the water I found the corpse of some dead adventurer, all shrivelled up and covered in what looked like tiny suction marks... and with that, I promptly turned and ran, not stopping until I felt the light of the sun on my face once again. I don't want to lose my life just for an adventure to tell! Maybe I can spin this story up to sound a little more interesting later at the college, but for now I'm just glad I didn't end up the same as that poor wretch.
